Certification of processes, as opposed to the compliance of product to standard requirements, indicates the implementation of a process in a quality manner. A single product can match the quality and safety requirements of the prescribed standards but to ensure that other products in the same serrie comply as well to the same requirements, without to be required to check the whole lot, you need to examine the production process at every stage, to make sure that the process is controlled and to certify it.
In a more complex product like a pressure vessel various processes such as welding are involved. From the manufacturer point of view it is inconceivable to perform destructive tests for each and every seam in the tank, since at the end of the day we will stay with many tests but with no product. From the customer (the buyer) point of view it is required to check the product at each stage of production. The problem is that the product's cost will become non-economic.
Certification of process comes to ensure the satisfaction of all parties, including the satisfaction of the end user who can be assured of receiving a quality and safe product which comply with the standard's requirements but also at a reasonable cost in order to be competitive.
